Nicosia’s light industries, mainly serving the local market, include the manufacture and processing of cotton yarns and textiles, cigarettes, flour, confectionery, soft drinks, footwear, and clothing. Nicosia is connected by good roads with the other major towns of the island. A new international airport was established in 1974 at Larnaca, about 21 miles (34 km) southeast of Nicosia. The Cyprus Museum in the city houses many archaeological treasures. Most of the population in the surrounding area is engaged in agriculture, and crops produced include wheat, barley, vegetables, and fruits; goats and sheep are also raised. Pop
